Latest Thoughts on Coffee and Your Health

Boston coffee lovers, the verdict is in and coffee’s health benefits are finally being recognized in a big way! Quite a few studies have come out in the last year that profess the health benefits of coffee in terms of reducing the risks of health issues such as:

  • multiple sclerosis
  • heart disease
  • type 2 diabetes
  • liver disease
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Prostate cancer

For those concerned over their Third Wave Coffee consumption it seems as though you may actually be doing yourself a favor—according to recent studies. While it is recommended that coffee lovers abstain from using high sugar, high-fat, flavor-filled products in their coffee (aligning perfectly with Third Wave Coffee lover habits), recent studies suggest drinking 3-5 cups of black coffee can actually do some good.

The studies published this year sharing these findings did so under the assumption that one cup was an 8 oz. cup, so that’s important to keep in mind. Additionally, the studies mentioned that how coffee was brewed had an effect on health due to the fact cafestol—found in the oily part of coffee—can potentially increase bad cholesterol. Cafestol is not caught by French presses, Turkish coffee, etc.

Of course studies mentioned that those with health concerns or who are pregnant should consult their doctors prior to drinking coffee, but overall studies remained very positive on coffee’s relationship to our health. For Third Wave Coffee drinkers that dedicate a good deal of energy to remaining particular about the quality of their coffee, this is great news!

How do you feel about these new findings?
